Originally from Palmerston North, Levi Sherwood is one of New Zealand’s best freestyle motocross riders. Starting out in motocross racing, he followed in the footsteps of his father Dave Sherwood, the professional speedway racer. Levi’s love for speed and adrenaline translated into his move to freestyle motocross and his rapid rise up the rankings onto the global stage. He started riding motorbikes at the age of 4, soon finding his niche for jumps and tricks in his back yard. At 12 years old he was invited to ride on the Crusty Demons Australasian tour, giving him a taste of professional freestyle.
He achieved global recognition at his first international appearance as a wildcard winning the Red Bull X-Fighters Mexico in 2009. At only 17, he became the youngest rider ever to win an X-Fighters event. Since then he has been regarded as a top rider in the X-Fighters and world freestyle motocross community. Following injuries in 2010 and 2011, Levi came back strong with the 2012 series title win in Sydney, followed by big wins in Mexico and Dubai gaining 5th overall for the 2013 series. Jumping to 2nd overall in 2014 Levi has gone from strength to strength over his career.
Levi’s signature style is characterised by his enviable flexibility and huge extension that makes him a technical ‘must watch’, also earning him the nickname ‘rubber kid’.
Levi also classes his 2010 participation in X-Games as a highlight, coming in silver by just one point to Travis Pastrana. He has also won silver at the 2012 and 2015 X Games. His determination to win gold is next level, as well as his ambition to become the most decorated freestyle motocross rider ever.
Now 24 years old, Levi Sherwood owns a 60 acre property that he has developed into a motocross wonderland, with a freestyle zone and motocross track with the new addition of a BMX track.
Look out for Levi hitting freestyle motocross events this year as he hunts his next titles.
