'Mad' Mike at first round of Formula Drift Japan

2 years ago No comments

Formula Drift Japan proved to be a challenge for both Mad Mike Whiddett and his team. The first round of the 2017 series kicked off at Suzuka over the weekend and was hectic for all involved.

The mechanical troubles started after HUMBUL was retired early with unrepairable damage to the engine manifold. Mike’s chief mechanic Kawato San came to the rescue though, managing to borrow a new car from Fujinaka Manabu.

Mike made the borrowed RX7 Arigato scream and after some decent runs after the track dried up, Whiddett managed a respectable score of 81 and a 10th place qualification. Epic results after only having 3 runs in the car.

Unfortunately for Mike and his team that is about where the weekend ended after Mike broke the HKS sequential gear box and drive shaft in his first battle against Hiroshima, as they were unable to fix it in the 5 minute timeout, the top 32 is where it ended.

Such a massive thanks to Kawato San and his team this weekend and especially Fujinaka San for lending his pro competition car at such short notice, that was so cool of him and for us to just be able to grab a few points in qualifying was amazing considering where we were at on Thursday. Always a treat being with the fans here at Suzuka, joining in and watching the battle action unfold
