Mad Mike crushes circuit racing debut at Hampton Downs 101

International drift legend and ilabb family member Mad Mike Whiddett has had a {short} break from drifting over the weekend as he competed in the Australian GT Series at Hampton Downs 101. The event marked the reopening of Hampton Downs after a $30m upgrade, seeing the fastest circuit models of Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ferrari, Mclaren, Bentley, and many others grace the Auckland track.

Mad Mike was teamed with Klark Quinn in the Darrell Lea STIX Mclaren 650s to go 101 laps around the 4km Hampton Downs circuit. Qualifying was Mike’s first time racing and he definitely didn’t disappoint. Mike gained 8th place in his debut qualifier and 10th overall after Quinn’s run, putting them in an ideal position for the 101 event.

Finals got off to a good start, with compulsory pit stops making tactics a game changer. A number of safety cars toward the end of the race allowed the field to catch up and spoiled some big leads, meaning Mike and Klark Quinn had a job of avoiding drama and simultaneously driving consistently at the front of the pack. At the end of the 101 laps the Mclaren 650s crossed the finish line in 8th position out of a field of 23.

This is an epic result for Mike’s first ever GT endurance race, proving he really can handle anything with an engine.

Drift fans were not to be let down, however, with Mike rolling MADBUL out of the stables for a demo before the 101 championship began.

With another skill set under his belt, Mike is stoked to be back home in NZ ready to relax after a long season touring the USA, England, Canada, Japan, South Africa and Australia.

Check back at the EDIT to see what antics Mad Mike gets up to during his summer in New Zealand.
